Bible study with me: 1 Samuel 16

***Note: So, it’s funny I was led to this verse because I had it in my mind I was going to study this verse when I got home. This verse tells the story of the anointing of David which is what Stephanie Ike talks about in her sermon (which I watched a few days ago), “Waiting On God.”

(v.7) “But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at things people look at. People look at outward appearance but the Lord looks at the heart.”

  • This is what God tells Samuel after Samuel believes one of David’s brother’s must be the one to get anointed because of how his brother looked.
  • I think of people who are homeless. Sometimes, we can assume that because they appear unclean and unkept, for the condition of their heart looks this way also. But actually, I have, I met some of the kindest and humblest people who are without homes and sometimes, they can be angels in disguise.
  • God does not care about what clothes we wear or the mask of behavior we use to cover up what’s inside. God cares about our character, for all things flow from the heart.
    • Jesus also said “the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.” (Matthew 12:34)
    • The Bible constantly talks about the condition of our heart; is it close to God or far from Him?
  • We can’t see the heart but God can, despite what layers people may use to cover (protect) their heart.
    • Additionally, sometimes we can get caught up in the superficiality of a person, such as their looks or status, rather than the content of their character/heart.
  • God is spirit so it is all He walks in which is why He focuses on things not seen such as the heart and spirit of a person.
    • When we begin to walk like Him, we will care about the heart too.
    • When we walk as our Father walks, we will care about the things He cares about such as the condition of our hearts and the condition of other’s hearts.
      • We will be drawn to those who have beautiful spirits as our Father is which is why He is drawn to the meek and humble.
    • This connects with Psalm 139 in which David says “Search me God and know my heart… see if there is any offensive way in me.”
      • The word look means to search for
      • God searches the contents of the heart to determine how that person can/will be used
      • He also searches the heart to help us look more like Him
  • When sin entered the world, God began to retrain us to look like Him because we are His.
    • This is why we need the power of His spirit to look like Him because He is without blemish and sin blemished us.

(v.10) “Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel but Samuel said to him ‘The Lord has not chose these.’”

  • Seven is the number of completion
  • God was beginning his purposes with the eight son (David) with a different generation.

(v.12) “He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsome features.”

  • I imagine David walking in and this golden light is surrounding him.
  • Also, he was described in a way that was unexpected considering many did not think he could be a king because of his appearance.
    • I think David is described in the way that God saw him.

Anoint: to be chosen by God for a specific calling or assignment. Example- David was chosen by God to become a king.

(v.13) “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on, the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.”

  • I think of Psalm 23 when David says “Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.” (KJV)
  • I also imagine David’s brothers watching him be chosen by God and not understanding why or thinking they would be chosen.
    • I wonder if they were jealous
  • I remember seeing the Spirit of the Lord come upon people in the New Testament
    • Jesus after He was baptized

Questions to reflect on

  1. Is my heart near to God or far from God? In other words, am I walking like my Father?
  2. If God were to search my heart, what would He find?
  3. What is God trying to show me through these scriptures?
  4. What does it look like to walk like Jesus?
  5. How have these verses changed me?

Prayer (Feel free to add what is personal to you)

Heavenly Father, thank you for the time that we got to spend together. Thank you for speaking to me and revealing things that you want me to bring to you. Thank you for revealing my need for Jesus and for reminding me that I can’t change on my own. Lord Jesus, help me to walk like You and lead me to scriptures where I can learn more about who You are and how You have called me to live. I pray Jesus, that you would transform my heart to look more like Yours. Help me to be sensitive to your leading and most of all, help me to love You more. Thank you for hearing my prayer. In Jesus’ name, I pray Amen!
