On suffering…

Suffering is a subtle gift that can be both beautiful and beneficial.

Suffering, when seen as a gift, softens our hearts. It helps us empathize with our neighbors who too, are suffering.

Suffering keeps us connected and dependent on one another, just as God intended. Suffering says, “I see you. I get you. I understand.” Suffering gently whispers, “it’s okay to not be okay. I’m here for you. How can I help you?”

Suffering encourages us to blossom. It plants us in the dark and teaches us how to grow. Suffering speaks wisdom saying, “Hey, I’ve been there. Let me tell you how I made it through.”

Suffering reveals our weaknesses and need to depend on God. Suffering identifies us with a Savior, a High Priest who is able to empathize with us in our weaknesses because He too, suffered greatly.

Suffering births hope and purpose which fuels our livelihood. Hope and purpose are what get us out of bed and keep us rooted in love.

Suffering is a reminder of what it means to be human; it’s apart of the human experience. Suffering and its weightiness inform us that we are still alive and still human and still feeling.

Suffering, when used to draw nearer to God, molds us, shapes us, refines us, and purifies us.

Suffering, though a subtle one, can be a gift if seen that way.
