A daily prayer to pray

Praying can seem daunting at times? I mean, what do you even begin to say to the God of the universe?

I know when I first began my journey as a Christian, I would often try to pray formally and say things like “Oh God, hallowed be thy name in all thy greatness,” not even really understanding what I was saying. There was still a disconnect as I learned how to talk with God and not to Him.

Over time, I’ve realized that prayer is a conversation, and in conversations, you talk and listen.

When you have a conversation with a loved one, you don’t talk to them using phrases such as “How art thou today?” or only talk to them without ever hearing what they have to say, do you? I hope not!

That said, I will outline one of the simplest yet most effective prayers I say daily. I see this prayer as a way to align myself with the way God wants me to live while also guarding myself from what is not from Him.

And the prayer goes a little something like:

Touch the top of your head: Father, today I ask that You would give me the mind of Christ and give me peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).

  • Oftentimes, the devil attacks our minds by placing unhealthy thoughts in our minds, such as anxious thoughts or suicidal thoughts. Please know that these thoughts will never come from Jesus as He desires to give us peace and a mind that is clutter-free!

Touch your eyes: Father, I pray that you would help me walk by faith and not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7) as I trust you to guide my life.

  • God asks us to move forward in life, trusting that He will lead us to where we need to be, whether that be in a career field, a city we need to live in, or the spouse that will be a good fit for us. Faith stems from hope as we look to the future, believing that we will end up where we are supposed to be, all with God’s help.
  • We often hear from four voices: God, ourselves, the devil, and other people (or the world). It is important that we know when and how God speaks to us so that we can know what He wants us to do and we can understand the difference between the truth (God’s words) and lies (anything that opposes God’s words). The main way we can know what God says is by reading His words, which are recorded in the Bible.

Touch your lips: Father, I pray that the words I speak would build up and edify others, not words that tear them down (Proverbs 18:21). I ask that You would have me say no more and no less than You want me to say.

  • In the Bible, God says that there is power of life and death in the tongue, meaning our words are really, really powerful! If you look in the book of Genesis (the very first book of the Bible), we see that the God of the universe literally used words to create the whole world. And because we are made similarly to Him, our words are very powerful as well, which means we have to be careful about what we say about ourselves and others. It is important that we do our best to speak good and kind things about ourselves and others since they are similar to God, too, and we can do this all with God’s help.
  • God wants us to live differently and reflect who He is to the world. He wants us to love well, forgive often, and tell people about Him so that He can help them, too. God also wants us to live in a way that is honorable to Him, meaning we don’t indulge in drunkenness, sex before marriage, or any of the other ways that He has told us not to live.

Touch your feet: Father, I thank You for the ability to move freely. I ask that You continue to order and establish my steps (Proverbs 16:9).

  • Being able to move freely is a blessing because there are many people who are unable to. Acknowledging every blessing God gifts us is a great way to retain joy and gratitude. It is also great to ask God to lead you to where you need to be so that you can walk into all that God has for you.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen!

That’s it, friend! Easy right? Now, it’s your turn. Feel free to add what you need, and enjoy fellowshipping with our great and kind Heavenly Father!

And don’t forget to listen because God might have something to say back!

I love you, friend. Be blessed.
